Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate standard including Leaving Certificate Applied. Mature students welcome. All applicants will be interviewed.


Work Placement

This course includes the 200 minimum hours work experience required by agencies who manage cover for childcare settings. 


Course Aims

This one-year course is designed to prepare students to work competently, safely and effectively with young children. It is ideal both for school-leavers and mature people seeking a formal qualification. Having successfully completed year one, students can, depending on performance at level 5, progress to the QQI Level 6 Supervision in Childcare Award in Marino College.

Future Prospects

Students who successfully complete this course may, depending on results, progress to the Level 6 second year. Where students wish to progress to employment, there are opportunities that include working in Practical Employment in Pre-School Centres, Day Nurseries, Creches, Child Care Residential Centres, Hospitals and as Nannies. There are links with related courses in Institutes of Technology in Ireland and the Degree course in Early Childhood Studies DIT, DCU, NUIM and others
