Also some individual courses have additional expenses to cover equipment and materials. Details of these charges are available on request from the college.

Policy Statement
Marino College is committed to equality of opportunity in all its practices, policies and procedures.

Garda Vetting
Students applying for courses involving working with children and or vulnerable adults, are required to undergo Garda Vetting procedures prior to commencing placements. If, as a result of the outcome of the Garda Vetting procedures, a student is deemed unsuitable to attend clinical or other professional placement he/she may be required to withdraw from the course.

Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) Maintenance Grants
Students attending full-time approved courses at Marino College are eligible to apply for a maintenance grant. The Grant is based solely on income and where students wish to proceed with an application it is necessary to apply to one’s local Vocational Education Committee.

Back to Education Allowance
The Back to Education Allowance is a scheme which enables anyone in receipt of benefits eg Jobseekers Allowance or One Parent Family Payment to enroll on a Post Leaving Certificate or Adult Education course and continue to keep their benefit. For more information on the scheme contact your local Social Welfare Office.

Back to Education Initiative
The Back to Education Initiative provides part-time Further Education Programmes for young people and adults. The aim is to give people an opportunity to combine return to learning with family and other responsibilities. Priority is given to early school leavers, participants can retain their benefits and there are no course charges.

The Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme VTOS
A limited number of places are available for mature students each year. Students who are over 21 and in receipt of social welfare payment or signing for credits for at least 6 months may be entitled to apply.

Career Guidance & Counseling
All students may avail of a Career Guidance and Counseling Service. This service assists students to make decisions regarding their future career options or further study. A Counseling service is available to students on an individual basis to address issues of personal concern.

Student Activities
Students enjoy participation in various College activities such as the planning and operation of the Open Day and the Five Lamps Arts Festival, preparing and assisting with Photographic and Artwork exhibitions.

Social activities are generally co-ordinated by course tutors and are an integral part of college life. Students from each course group elect a student representative to participate on the Student Representative Council (SRC). This Council meets on a regular basis throughout the year to discuss matters of interest to the students. The SRC is also responsible for organising various social and fundraising activities within the College. A member of the Council is nominated to represent the students on the City of Dublin VEC Sub-Committee for Marino College.

Job Placement Services
For many years the College has provided a job placement service for students. Employers have come to appreciate the quality of our courses and the excellent caliber of the students that graduate each year. The excellent working relationship that we enjoy with employers through the work experience links is also a great source of securing permanent employment for a large number of the students each year.

Progression
The Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS) facilitates progression to a variety of higher education courses via specific FETAC Level 5 and 6 Certificates. Under this scheme a number of places are reserved by higher education institutions for FETAC applicants for entry to a range of 3rd level courses.
A pilot scheme has been launched to facilitate progression routes to certain higher certificate courses with the exception of Nursing Degree courses. Under this initiative, most course places are open to FETAC applicants along with leaving certificate applicants. The scoring system under these new arrangements enables a FETAC certificate holder to achieve up to a maximum of 400 points. However, applicants are advised to confirm details with the admissions office of the appropriate 3rd level college. See also www.cao.ie for further details.
