This accredited course is designed to prepare students
for a career in Dental Nursing and encourage participants to gain
a recognised professional qualification. During the course you
will be able to experience the role of the Dental Nurse in a variety
of dental settings.
Leaving Certificate standard. NB Applicants must have Leaving Cert Biology All applicants will be interviewed. Mature applicants welcome.
Both the practical skills and the theory of course will follow the FETAC Syllabus and National Certificate Examiniation Syllabus in the first and second years. The curriculum includes the following:

Students will spend two days per week working in a Dental Practice. This arrangement ensures that students will acquire the necessary experience in dealing with the demands of the surgery. Also ensuring that students have the required 24 months experience as required by the General Dental Council UK for registration on qualifying. All students will be Garda vetted and will require Hepatitis B vaccination for work placement. As the vaccination process takes approximately four months, students should bear this in mind when preparing for work placement starting in early October.
Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) and Occupational First Aid Certificate
as recognised by the Health and Safety Authority in first year.
Diploma in Dental Nursing - National Examination Board of Dental Nursing (NEBDN) syllabus in second year.
Assessment of theory and practice is continuous throughout the course. However,
final qualifications are dependent on success in the Diploma in Dental Nursing (NEBDN). This Course consists of lectures, tutorial, practical classes and demonstrations.
A Record of Experience from NEBDN (UK) must be completed and signed off by a registered Dentist from your work experience over the 2 year course for entry to the final NEBDN Exam.
A route of registration is available to successful students with the General Dental Council (GDC) UK and the Irish Dental Council (IDC)
There are excellent opportunities for students to follow careers as Dental Nurses in General Dental Practices and Community Dental Clinics and Dental Nursing in Dental Hospitals for those who complete the National Diploma. It is also a useful bridge to careers in Dental Hygiene and Oral Health Education and Special Needs Dental Nursing.
